Board Announces Machalek As Finalist For Town Administrator Position

Public comments encouraged through June 25

Following an executive session June 11, 2019, the Estes Park Town Board announced Travis Machalek as the single finalist for the position of Town Administrator. Machalek has served as Assistant Town Administrator since April 2015. Pending the results of an interview process and public input, he may succeed current Town Administrator Frank Lancaster, with a transition period through Sept. 6, when Lancaster retires.

Mayor Todd Jirsa commented, "The board reviewed 62 applicants from a nationwide search. Besides Travis, none of the candidates have the breadth of experience and right fit with the community. He is our first choice to fill this critical role." The Town Administrator is responsible for carrying out the policies set by the Town Board and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town and its staff of approximately 200 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, as well as over 500 volunteers.

The Town Board encourages the public to provide comments on Machalek's finalist status by June 25 Comments may be submitted to the Town Board at the Town Clerk's office, Room 130 of Town Hall at 170 MacGregor Ave., or by emailing Interviews with the Town Board, staff and a community panel are expected to occur by June 25. Following the interviews and comment period, the Town Board will announce its final decision.

As Assistant Town Administrator, Machalek supports the Town Administrator, oversees organizational policy development and risk management, manages departments on a permanent and interim basis, and supports special projects including workforce housing, child care and family issues, creative arts and economic development. Machalek holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas and has completed the University of Virginia's Senior Executive Institute. He is also a member of the Leadership ICMA class of 2020 -- a competitive-application leadership development program developed by the International City/County Management Association. His past experience includes work in the City Manager's Office at Laramie, Wyoming, the County Administrator's Office in Douglas County, Kansas, and the City Manager's Office in Fort Collins, Colorado. Machalek and his wife, Ashley, have been residents of Estes Park since 2015. He is a youth basketball coach and serves on the board of the Estes Park Non-Profit Resource Center.
