We’ll Miss You Little Chippewa
By: Dr. Marie Richardson
I am deeply saddened to tell you that on Tuesday, October 6, Chippewa suddenly became extremely ill, we started emergency treatments and then Mike and I rushed him down to the Critical Care Unit at CSU School of Veterinary Medicine. After valiant efforts by the Equine Critical Care Team, Chippewa passed away in Mike’s and my arms. He was eight months old. At this time, the official diagnosis is physiologic shock resulting in severe cardiovascular compromise of unknown cause. We still have many questions as to why, maybe we will never know.
On the way home from Fort Collins, Mike and I were numb with pain. I began asking why? Not why he had to die but why did this little foal have to fight battle after battle in his first few months, become a happy normal growing foal only to have to succumb to something so unexpected. Why was he not taken 8 months ago?
As I began the miserable task of explaining what happened to my kids, I began to answer that very question. In his short life he had a profound effect on not only my family’s life but also many other people’s lives. I want to share that more with you but in fairness to him and those who cared for him, I will have to wait until next week. The deadline is nearing and truthfully, I am emotionally drained and need the time to settle my emotions and gather my thoughts more clearly.
