Warns Of Dangers Of Pine Beetle Spraying

To The Editor:

I woke up this morning to see that my neighbor was having their trees sprayed to protect against the beetle problem. People please be a good neighbor and warn you neighbors beforehand! Carbaryl (Sevin), the pesticide, is the active ingredient in this spray and it is harmful to people and animals! I wasn’t given any notice to protect myself, my dogs or my garden that I growing organically!

Here’s one source that says some of the harmful effects:

It causes birth defects in mammals, especially dogs.

It worsens the condition of people with hypertension and people on anti-depressant drugs.

It impairs the function of the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, and the reproductive system.

It causes hyperactivity and learning disabilities in mammals.

It could increase the chance of heart attack in people with weak hearts.
The main break-down product, nitrosocarbaryl, which is easily created in the human gut, is a potent cancer-causing agent.

It causes irreversible chromosomal damage to human DNA (the genes in our cells).
In New Jersey, where several young women gave birth to babies with defects…specifically four cases of Spina bifida, a crippling birth defect where the spinal cord protrudes from the body, and three cases of hydrocephalus, which is an accumulation of fluid in the brain. source: here

This is just one website I visited, there are more that say the same thing. and by the way, for those who think it’s not harmful, take a look at the people applying the spray, they are wearing full protective suits, with gloves and a respirator. Makes you think.

I obviously don’t agree with the spraying, but the least others can do is  be a good neighbor and warn those living around you!
