Wally Betts

Former Estes Park resident Wally Betts, died at the Bettendorf Health Care Center in Bettendorf, lA Monday morning March 31, 2014. He was 85 years old.

Walter Leroy Betts, Jr. was born March 9, 1929 in Moline, lL. His parents were Walter Leroy Betts, Sr. and Kathryn Hynes Betts. At age 19 he served his country in the National Guard. In December 1949 he married Sylvia {Sally} Colegrove in East Moline, IL. He served a tour in Korea during the country’s conflict. On July 3, 197O he married Elizabeth Lindholm in Moline, lL. Wally was an active athlete, Golf, bowling; cross country skiing and track were some of the sports he competed in- He was proud to have pitched softball for over 6O years and had participated in many Senior Olympic Games, winning numerous medals. After retirement in 1986 from the Rock lsland Arsenal, the couple moved to Estes Park, CO. He also retired as a major from the Army. Liz died in 2004 and Wally eventually moved to Bettendorf, lA. to be near his family. Wally is survived 2 sisters-in law, Ruth Ann Fullner, Priscilla Alberg, and brother-in-law Charles Lindholm, a son Steven Betts of Sterling, lL a daughter, Nanry Leppert of Bettendorf, lA, 5 grandkids, 13 great- grandchildren, two great-great- grandkids, and 12 nieces and nephews, 14 great- nieces and nephews, 12 great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, half brother James Pierce, Liz, and Sally.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Wally’s life at Shepherd Of The Mountains Lutheran Church in Estes Park on Sunday May 11th at 3:00 pm followed by a military burial at Estes Valley Memorial Gardens.
