Town Board To Consider Changes To Electric Rates February 8th

Water rates discussion continued from January 25

The Estes Park Town Board will consider changes to electric rates during a February 8 public hearing, scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Town Board Room at Town Hall. The Board will also continue the discussion on water rates, which began with the public hearing on January 25. The Board asked Town staff to bring back information on capital infrastructure needs and the minimum rate increase required to meet operating requirements and debt service obligations for both water and electric. Any adopted rate changes would take effect approximately 30 days later.

Proposed rate changes may be reviewed at www.estes.org/lightpower, in Room 100 at Town Hall, 170 MacGregor Avenue and at the Estes Valley Library, 335 East Elkhorn Avenue. Citizens are encouraged to comment on the proposed rates at the hearing. Anyone who cannot attend the public hearing may submit comments to the Town Clerk. Contact the Clerk at jwilliamson@estes.org; in Room 150 of Town Hall or by mail at P.O. Box 1200 in Estes Park, CO 80517.

The Town periodically reviews the cost of providing services as well as projected revenues — the rates paid by customers — to ensure continued high-quality water and electric utility services and plan for future upgrades through capital improvement projects. The Town’s public water and electric utilities are not-for-profit, cost-based entities that rely solely on user fees to operate. Costs and revenues must be balanced in order to maintain operations and keep utilities in line with ever-increasing federal standards. In 2010, the Town hired HDR Engineering to complete cost of service and rate studies. The firm concluded that most customer classes should be adjusted to support the increasing cost of services and to maintain fair and equitable rates.

The complete cost of service studies including proposed future utilities projects to be funded with customer fees are available for review at www.estes.org/lightpower, in Room 100 of Town Hall and at the Estes Valley Library.
