Time To Sign Up For Estes Park Learning Place Third Annual Spelling Bee
The Estes Park Learning Place is holding its Fourth Annual Adult Spelling Bee on Monday, May 3. Last year over 300 people came to watch and to cheer for their favorite team. In the end, Team BEElieve It, Allison Grime, Kerry Grimes and Walter Chaw were awarded the Estes Park Learning Place Annual Adult Spelling Bee traveling trophy. Who will win the traveling trophy at this year’s Bee?
What It Is
The Estes Park Learning Place Adult Spelling Bee is a community event that raises funds for the Estes Park Learning Place, a non profit organization agency providing one-to-one tutoring for learners from early education to adults. The event will be held on Monday, May 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Estes Park High School Auditorium. We are grateful to our talented cast members who are returning for the fourth year. The Spellmasters are Kathleen Kase and Kurtis Kelly. Claudine Perrault and Robert Burkhardt are the judges. Rounding out this talented crew is Kris Hazelton, our gracious host who will keep the evening moving and have you home on time.
How it works
In the opening rounds, teams of three people, representing businesses, clubs, organizations, church groups, or just three friends will compete against other teams. The Spellmasters state and define the word and teams collaborate on the spelling. The team captain writes the word on the white board provided and, at the end of the allotted time, all teams display their boards simultaneously. Teams correctly spelling the word continue until only one team is left at the end of the round. The winning teams from these preliminary rounds compete in a final round until only one team remains. That team will be the Estes Park Champion Spellers for 2010 and will take home the traveling Champion Bee Trophy to keep until the 2011 Spelling Bee.
The team needs to complete a registration form and pay a $150 tax deductible entry fee. When registration and payment is received, the captain will be sent the word list and the official rules of the Spelling Bee. The registration deadline is Friday, April 23 or when 24 teams have registered, whichever occurs first. If you know you want to compete, get your registration form in early! Registration forms are available at Estes Park News, Reel Mountain Theater, Macdonald Book Shop, the Estes Valley Library or www.eplearningplace.org.
If you don’t want to compete in the Bee yourself, you could sponsor a team or just come to cheer on your favorite team and enter to win some great door prizes! Whether you are a competitor or spectator, it is a fun, family event as the teams compete to be the 2010 Champion Spellers of Estes Park!
