Silent Auction Fundraiser For Rebekah Steers
Mary’s Lake Lodge is hosting a Silent Auction for the benefit of Rebekah Steers on Friday, December 10, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Rebekah is the daughter-in-law of Karin & Roger Steers, owners of the Anniversary Inn. Friends and family have organized a fund raising drive to raise money for medical expenses. She is 27 years old and has been stricken with Lyme Disease. Since she was not properly diagnosed in the early stages she is now in late stage, the most serious form of the disease. Unless this disease is treated aggressively, there is a real risk that it will become a chronic condition. Her current symptoms have her in a wheelchair, or, on a good day, a walker. Unable to work for over one year she and her husband, Graham, are not able to come close to meeting the cost of treatment, even with family assistance. Therefore, she is on a vastly reduced treatment program. Her story in her own words:
“In early September 2009, I was 26, living in Chicago with my husband, and doing manual labor full time. Working the 3 a.m. shift one morning my back went out and I left work early, barely able to walk and drive. I laid down and have not worked or risen from bed without pain since. In the months that followed—heavily medicated, confined to a bed or wheelchair, and suffering chronic pain—I saw many specialists, with many differing prognoses and diagnoses. Finally in July 2010 I began treatment for Lyme Disease and co-infections. As Lyme Disease is a difficult illness to diagnose and treat, my medical expenses have jumped to thousands a month since being diagnosed. Since September 2009, my medical expenses have totaled over $33,000. My husband and I have moved home to Colorado and family, community and support. Now that I have the proper diagnosis, I am seeing some improvement for the first time in over a year. However, having been unable to work, I cannot afford to take full treatment. This disease may be chronic, but it may be curable or at least rendered less devastating if we can act quickly and treat thoroughly. The cost of treatment is a burden my family cannot shoulder alone.
Before Lyme Disease I was a recent college graduate with a BA in Religious Studies. I was working two jobs to help support my husband in graduate school. I hoped to continue my education, pursuing my interest in medicine and the healing arts as a student of Naturopathic Medicine. A lay herbalist, an avid learner, a very healthy and blessed young woman, I enjoyed many privileges I didn’t even recognize until they were gone, My life was full, and I lived it fully.”
