Shirley (Schultz) Reetz

Obit-ReetzShirley Adrienne (Schultz) Reetz, age 79 of York, NE, passed on to her heavenly home, as a result of a series of strokes and dementia, on Friday, September 27, 2013 at York. She was born September 15, 1934 in York to Roy and Thelma (Cutrell) Schultz. A graduate of York High School, Shirley was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Raymond Reetz on May 30, 1954.

Although Raymond tried his best to make a country girl out of Shirley, gardening and raising chickens and pigs, weren’t in the cards for the city (albeit a small city) girl. So in 1957, the young couple purchased the Cozy Lunch from Shirley’s parents and never looked back. In 1964, the small diner changed its name to Chances “R” Restaurant and a dream became a reality.

The Chances “R” Restaurant was Shirley’s pride and joy. She was always on the lookout for new recipes to try, unique ways to present food, and new holiday décor! Included in Shirley’s list of ways to improve the dining experience was keeping things in tip-top shape. This meant the owner could often be found cleaning on her hands and knees most times with a toothbrush, always with elbow grease and Amway.

Shirley greeted family, friends, and customers with the same wide, welcoming smile. And, whether dancing on a table, or cutting of men’s ties, Shirley was the life of the party and a great hostess.

Over the years, Shirley traveled the globe with Raymond and friends enjoying trips to ports like Hawaii and Singapore, along with visits to her “little cabin by the river” in Estes Park, Colorado, where they also own Rockmount Cottages. Shirley loved Christmas, filling the house with music, decorations, family, friends, and of course, food. An avid shopper, Shirley would often be seen with her daughters and granddaughters in-hand, chattering about their treasures.

During her life, Shirley worked not only in the restaurant business, but as an employee of Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Co. She was involved in Mrs. Jaycees, was a bowler, and assisted with the Miss York beauty pageant. Shirley was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

A woman who was no stranger to hard work, Shirley loved her family deeply and made the most of each moment she was given.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband Raymond of York and her three children: Suzanne (Tom) Vanous of York, Sondra (Jeff) Hermanson of Lincoln, NE, and Jason (Holly) Reetz of Estes Park, CO; grandchildren: Collin and Ryland Reetz of Estes Park, Valerie (Brad) Veen of Chandler, AZ, Melanie (Terry) McWilliams of Lincoln, NE, Ryan Vanous of Raleigh, N.C., Adrianne (Josh) Aksamit of St. Louis, MO, Brianne (Zach) Wentz of Raleigh, N.C., Jonathan Hermanson of Lincoln, NE, Timothy Hermanson of Omaha, NE, and Carianne Hermanson of Lincoln, NE; great-grandchildren: Evangeline and Scarlett Veen, Eva McWilliams, Logan, Peyton and Sydnee Askamit, and Brynlee and Harrison Wentz. She is also survived by her brother Bob (Joan) Schultz of Huntington Beach, CA, brothers-in-law Lee Blake of Parkville, MO, Elvin Reetz of Benedict, NE, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Melvin (JoAnn) Reetz of York, along with nieces and nephews. She will be remembered with love.

Preceding Shirley in death were her parents, Roy and Thelma Schultz; mother and father-in-law William and Anna Reetz; sister Joyce Blake; sister and brother-laws Edsel and Delores Carlson and sister-in-law Venicia Reetz.
