Plein Air Rockies 2012

Beauty and inspiration go hand-in-hand when artists come to the Colorado Rockies to paint the parks this summer as part of Plein Air Rockies 2012 – A Festival of Outdoor Painting in Estes Park August 4 through September 30. Plein Air Rockies is presented by the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park. 2012 marks an 11 year milestone for the presentation of plein air painting events for the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park.

Plein Air Rockies 2012 is a full spectrum arts festival with numerous events geared for audiences of all ages. The festival is staged in four parts including the “Prelude Art Exhibition” August 4 – 23, “National Paint Out” August 11 – 23 and Opening Day “Quick Draw and Auction”, “Art Exhibition, Miniature Show and Sale” August 25 – September 30, and “Fall Paint Outs” in September. Events will take place at the CAC Fine Art Gallery, Performance Park, Riverside Plaza, the national park, throughout downtown and within a 50 miles radius of Estes Park.

Prelude Art Exhibition

The festival traditionally opens on August 4 with a “Prelude Show” in the CAC Fine Art Gallery located at 423 W. Elkhorn Ave. The public can view works by 36 Plein Air Rockies participating artists from across the United States and Calgary Canada. Artists were selected through a “Call for Entries” process, and Colorado artist John Taft served as the 2012 Jury Judge.

The prelude exhibit allows the public to see the styles and techniques, and become acquainted with the PAR participating artists during the “National Paint Out” portion of the festival. The 2012 Prelude Art Exhibition spotlights a variety of subject matter including landscape, architecture, portraiture and still life painted on location and in the studio.

2012 Poster Competition

Each year participating artists compete for the honor to have their painting selected for

the Plein Air Rockies poster and other printed materials marketing the festival. Bill Davidson, OPA of Johns Creek, Georgia was selected as the 2012 Poster Competition winner for his plein air oil depiction “Alberta Falls” painted in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Not only will his painting appear on advertising materials, but new in 2012, the Cultural Arts Council has collaborated with Snowy Peaks Winery and Jackie’s Java to create limited edition coffee and wines to compliment this year’s event.

On Saturday August 4, the CAC Fine Art Gallery will have the Plein Air Rockies label dark roast Colombian coffee available for the public to purchase. Jackie’s Java in Fort Collins, CO has a program in which non-profits can order and sell 1.75 oz bags of coffee as fundraising projects. Jackie’s Java coffees are organic, fair trade, shade grown certified.

Snowy Peaks Winery of Estes Park, CO will offer two Plein Air Rockies special label wines, Élevé (red) and Oso White (white). The Élevé will be available for tasting and purchase starting August 4, and the Oso White will be available mid-August. Snowy Peaks Winery & Tasting Room is located in the downtown shopping district in Estes Park, Colorado at 292 Moraine Ave.

Room Hours through Labor Day are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and Sunday 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All wines sales will be conducted through the winery, and Snowy Peaks is donating $2.00 of each bottle sold to benefit the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park.

Artists will begin arriving on August 11 to begin the “National Paint Out” in Estes Park and surrounding areas.

The “Prelude Rockies 2012 Exhibition” will remain on display through August 23. The CAC Fine Art Gallery is located at 423 W. Elkhorn Ave. in West Park Center. The gallery is open 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. daily, and until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays through August 23 during Thursday Night Live.
