Observatory Open House And Intro To Night Sky
Observatory Public Night & Introduction to Night Sky Astrophotography is the subject of this month’s Estes Valley Astronomical Society (EVAS) meeting. EVAS in conjunction with The Estes Park Memorial Observatory is offering a free public open house/star night on Thursday, August 28, 2014. The goal of EVAS is to promote amateur astronomy and education in the Estes valley.
Our guest speaker for the evening will be club member Robert Johnson, Ph.D. Robert is an amateur astrophotographer. He will discuss the techniques and equipment he uses to capture photos of planetary and deep space objects. He’ll show several of his photos and discuss features of the objects captured in those photographs. Robert is also a volunteer at the Estes Park Memorial Observatory and in that capacity he has offered to work with club members who are interested in becoming involved in astrophotography.
Robert moved to Estes Park in October 2011 and has been an EVAS club member since 2012. He is a semi-retired biochemist and remains a part time employee of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.
The observatory is just north of the high school at 1600 Manford Ave. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The presentation, including a question and answer period, lasts about an hour. After the presentation, weather permitting, we will look through the 12 inch dome telescope at various celestial objects.
Information about the meeting can be found on the observatory website at: www.AngelsAbove.Org.
