Melvin E. Cropley

Obit-CropleyHastings resident Melvin E. Cropley, 78, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at Good Samaritan Society Perkins Pavilion in Hastings after a short battle with cancer.

Mel was born August 4, 1935 in Hastings, Nebraska the son of Oscar and Nora (DeBord) Cropley. He graduated from Juniata High School with the class of 1953. Mel attended Milford Community College where he studied Diesel Mechanics and served on the volunteer fire department. Mel married Norma Jean Graham on July 28, 1956 and the couple settled in Hastings. There he worked for Sherman Service Center and McClelland Farm Equipment. Mel and his son Steve owned and operated Total Power in Hastings before he retired in 2000.

Mel and his wife retired to Estes Park, Colorado where he opened a landscaping business. He enjoyed classic cars, hunting, woodworking, and spending time on the shooting range. Mel was a member of the Estes Park Car Club, Estes Park Shooting Club, the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, and he served as an ambassador for the Estes Park Chamber of Commerce. Mel and Norma enjoyed being active in their community and entertaining friends and family in their home.

Mel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma; son, Steven Cropley and his wife Lesa of Hastings; daughter Lynda Cates and her husband Joel of Belleville, Kansas; two granddaughters, Jessica Abbott and her husband AJ of Valentine, Nebraska, and Courtney Hughbanks of Kearney, Nebraska; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer Eitzmann and her husband Mike of Concordia, Kansas, and Ryan Cates and his wife Ashton of Jewell, Kansas; two step-great grandchildren, Olivia and Carter Eitzmann of Concordia, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services were held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Good Samaritan Society All Faiths Chapel in Hastings. In honoring his wishes to be cremated there was no viewing or visitation. A second funeral service will be held in Estes Park, Colorado in January, 2014. Date and time to be announced.

Mel wished for his ashes to be scattered at Rock Cut in Estes Park, CO. A service is planned for Spring 2014.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Society or Mary Lanning Hospice.
