Obit-CropleyHastings resident Melvin E. Cropley, 78, passed away Monday, December 2, 2013 at Good Samaritan Society Perkins Pavilion in Hastings Nebraska after a short battle with cancer.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Allenspark Community Church, Allenspark, CO, on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.

In honoring his wishes to be cremated there is no viewing or visitation. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Society in care of Lynda Cates, 1904 Country Club Dr. Belleville, KS 66935, or Allenspark Community Church, P.O. Box 45, Allenspark CO 80510.

Mel was born August 4, 1935 in Hastings, Nebraska the son of Oscar and Nora (DeBord) Cropley. He graduated from Juniata High School with the class of 1953. Mel attended Milford Community College where he studied Diesel Mechanics and served on the volunteer fire department. He worked for Sherman Service Center and McClelland Farm Equipment. Mel and his son Steve owned and operated Total Power in Hastings before he retired in 2000.

Mel and his wife retired to Estes Park, Colorado where he opened a landscaping business. He enjoyed classic cars, hunting, woodworking, and spending time on the shooting range. Mel was a member of the Estes Park Car Club, Estes Park Shooting Club, the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, and he served as an ambassador for the Estes Park Chamber of Commerce.

Mel is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma; son, Steven Cropley and his wife Lesa of Hastings; daughter Lynda Cates and her husband Joel of Belleville, Kansas; two granddaughters, Jessica Abbott and her husband AJ of Valentine, Nebraska, and Courtney Hughbanks of Kearney, Nebraska; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer Eitzmann and her husband Mike of Concordia, Kansas, and Ryan Cates and his wife Ashton of Jewell, Kansas; three step-great grandchildren, Olivia ,Carter, and Hudson.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
