Maxine S. Oldham

Maxine Schmitt Oldham, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Prospect Park Living Center in her adopted town of Estes Park, CO at the age of 82 on May 20th. Maxine Oldham was born in Hutchinson KS, graduated high school at Hutchinson High and attended Kansas State University where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Arthur L. Harper, Jr, also of Hutchinson KS. She served as secretary to the Dean of Harvard Law school while her husband attended the law school and gave birth to two children, Alyson Maxine Harper and Arthur Blake Harper while in Massachusetts.

She accepted membership into the ladies philanthropic organization PEO. In 1962, she and Arthur journeyed to Rhodesia, Africa as missionaries where she gave birth to their third child, Mark Frederick Harper. They lived there for five years before returning to the United States. While there she assisted in the building of an innovative church that was designed in the native tradition of a round building and used local resources and building materials. She lived shortly in Rowayton, CT before returning to Hutchinson, KS after the dissolution of the marriage. In Hutchinson, she became the secretary to the Executive Director of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and subsequently was re-married to George Oldham. Oldham was President of Pegues, Inc., a well-respected ladies department store. In 1979, they relocated to Estes Park, CO where George opened The Men’s Shop and she took a job at First National Bank of Estes Park in its marketing department. Maxine fell in love with Estes Park, always appreciating the wildlife, elk and deer, that wander freely about town. She was active in the local PEO chapter for several years, and was loved beyond words for her inimitable, sassy spirit by many people. She is survived by her three children, Alyson who lives in Malibu, CA, Blake, who resides in Jacksonville FL, and Mark, who lives in Hutchinson, KS. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Estes Park Medical Center Foundation.
