Lew Wallace of Estes Park died at the Estes Park Medical Center Monday July 25, 2011. He was 94 years old. Lewis Jessup Wallace was born March 18, 1917 in Greeley, CO. His parents were Ernest and Mary (Jessup) Wallace. Lew grew up in LaSalle and Greeley. His family goes back three generations in Estes Park as his grandfather and father were builders in the area. Lew graduated from Greeley High School and the University of Northern Colorado with a Master’s Degree in Music. He continued his graduate work in Utah and Oregon. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Security Intelligence Department as an Investigator. He attained the rank of Corporal. Lew married Jane Anderson on May 6, 1944 in Durham, NC. He was a music director, educator and national music consultant. He held positions in Greeley, CO, Sterling, Grand Blanc, Ann Arbor and Pontiac in Michigan, Pendleton, OR and Cincinnati, OH. In 1976 Lew and Jane retired to Estes Park where he was involved in many community activities including the Rotary Club of Estes Park, the Fine Arts Guild, EVIA, AARP, Upper Thompson Sanitation District, Rocky Ridge Music Center, Summer Residents Association, the Library Planning Commission, the Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation. Lew was a member of Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. Jane died August 7, 1994.
On June 18, 1995 Lew married Dorothy (Whowell) Faulkner in Estes Park. The couple remained active in the Estes Park community and moved to Good Samaritan Village. Lew is survived by his wife Dotty, daughters Claudia Menard of Estes Park and Lonni Swanson of Austin, TX, stepchildren Lisa Shultz and David Faulkner, three grandchildren and four step grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Monday August 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies.
