Larimer County Sheriff’s Office 2008 Citizen Academy

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has announced open registration for the 2008 Citizen Academy which will run from September 11 through December 4, 2008. Interested citizens will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Administration Building, 2501 Midpoint Drive in Fort Collins. One full Saturday session will be held on September 27, 2008, which will include hands-on firearms simulation, crime scene investigation and car stop techniques. The Academy will not meet during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Information, applications and class schedule may be obtained at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Front Desk or on line at http://larimersheriff.org/CitizensAcademy/.  Those forms must be returned in person no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2008, along with a valid Colorado driver’s license and cash or check in the amount of $20.00. Applicants to the Academy must meet minimum requirements of being 18 years of age with no felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests within one year of the start of the academy. Class size is limited and admittance will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Citizen Academy members are expected to make a personal commitment to attend all classes.

Classes for the 2008 Academy include:
· Crime Lab presentation and tour
· SWAT including Bomb Squad
· Communications Center presentation and tour
· Emergency Management and Emergency Operations
· K-9 demonstration
· Patrol procedures
· Investigation procedure including polygraph
· Detention Center tour
· Criminal Impact Unit
· Arrest Control/Use of Force
·  Volunteer opportunities for citizens

“This Academy gives the general public a good overview of law enforcement, what we do and how we do it,” Sheriff Alderden said. “Those who have attended previous academies said they not only gained insight to the everyday workings of the Sheriff’s Office, but also had a great time.”
