Grew up in Estes Park, CO; was an eagle scout, helped with father with woodwork business, carpentry and construction. Attended high school in Estes Park, CO; received Naval ROTC scholarship to attend college. Attended college at University of Colorado, Boulder and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation was a US Navy active duty member(74-80). During his undergraduate studies John also received a private pilots license.

Met Annamaria Klein in 1974 in Vallejo, CA during his nuclear power training. They married the following year July 19, 1975. Active duty stations Hawaii, Virginia, and Connecticut. He was an active duty member until 1980.

In 1979 John and Annamaria had their first daughter Serena. She is now married to Nicholas Pfister and they are expecting their first child. In 1979 John began school at the University of California, Berkeley; he graduated in 1980 with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering. They moved to Marina in 1980 and he started working at Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency.

From 1980 to 2004 he was a Naval reservist. His duties included officer training, mentoring, supervising and evaluating Navy engineers, scientists, and technicians. He served in the engineering department on two nuclear submarines. His awards during this time include Meritorious Services Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation, and several letters of commendation. He retired at the rank of Captain after more than 30 years of service.

In 1983 John and Annamaria had their second child Dawn Elizabeth Klein. She is engaged to Amar Patel. In 1985 John and Annamaria had their third child Joanna Rose Klein. Their family dog, Roxy, was adopted from the Monterey County SPCA in 2001; Roxy was John’s kitchen construction and popcorn partner.

In 2005 he began working at California American Water. During John’s time at this company he worked as the project manager on the Costal Water Project and San Clemente Dam Seismic Retrofit.

In his spare time John enjoyed carpentry, automechanics, camping, car races and there was nothing that he could not fix. He was a member of the American Socitey of Civil Engineers, U.S. Naval Reservists and an honorary life member of Tau Beta Pi.

John’s cremated remains were scattered at sea with a 21 gun salute to accompany 3 Admirals in attendance.
