Jim Pickering Offers Historic Tour Of Estes Valley
-Estes Park News, Estes Park, Colorado-
Back by popular demand, Dr. Jim Pickering, author and Historian Laureate of Estes Park, will offer an educational and fun morning with his “Estes Valley Historic Tour” on May 29th and June 5th. He will bring to life our local past with his extensive knowledge and insight. The tour lasts from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 1:00 p.m. It is open to the public and recommended for adults and children age 12 and over.
Cost of the tour is $15. If you are a member of the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation it’s only $5.00. The tickets may be purchased at the Estes Park Museum, 200 Fourth St.
Some carpooling and a Rocky Mountain National Park pass will be necessary. Spaces are available for both dates. Call (970) 586-6256 for reservations. Participants will need to bring water and wear layers and good walking shoes.
Have you ever wondered how Estes Park got it’s name or what famous man from Denver bestowed it and why? Learn why, as you start your tour on Fish Creek Road. Following that same road south, past Lord Dunraven’s cottage, you’ll come to the site of the English Hotel where you’ll hear another part of Estes Park history.
“The next stop was within Rocky Mountain National Park at the site of Sprague’s Ranch,” recalls Ken Jessen, a participant from last year’s tour. “Pickering walked the group through a shallow valley just below the road leading to the Moraine Park campground. Starting with a modest homestead cabin in 1875, Abner Sprague and his wife Alberta built a lodge, a vast complex of cabins, a nine-hole golf course and a swimming hole”.
You’ll have the opportunity to get out and walk around other sites while Pickering uses historic photographs to enhance your understanding of local history.
If you are not a member of the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, it is easy to join, just call the Museum at 970 586- 6256 for details.
