Janet Smith West
Janet Smith West, 90, of Estes Park, Colorado, died October 15,2008. Janet was born January 24,1918 to Myron L. and Eunice (Hall) Smith in Denver, Colorado. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Janet attended Kent School for Girls in Denver. During that time, she was a member of the Chevy Chase Riding Club. Janet won ribbons in horse riding events in the Denver National Western Stock Show. Janet then attended Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley, Mass. She went on to the University of Colorado graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940. There she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and of the Junior League of Denver.
Janet met Marion Francis West III, (Frank), while he was serving as a lieutenant in the Air Force stationed at Lowery Field. They married February 28, 1942 and had 65 years together. While living in Denver, Janet volunteered in such organizations as, Welcome Wagon, Junior League, and was a volunteer docent for the Denver Zoo. She was a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Janet and Frank first owned property in Estes Park in 1958. They began building their home on their land in 1959. They were summer residents until 1974 when they moved to Estes Park permanently. Janet joined the Community Church of the Rockies participating in the church choir and then in the church bell choir for many years. Janet’s true love was being a mother and wife.
Her other love and passion was her pets, especially her dogs and horses. Janet served on the board of the Pet Association of Estes Park. She started the Estes Park horse club called Trail Ridge Riders. This club presented eight years of week long horse camps for children, offered many group trail rides, and had meetings with informative guest speakers on horse care. It also offered a once a year horse show at the Fairgrounds. Janet was a great fan of the Rooftop Rodeo, riding her horse in many rodeo parades. She could be seen sitting in her box at the Fairgrounds through the summers attending all the horse shows. Janet was a nature enthusiast, supporting environmental organizations. She adored the mountains here in Estes Park and inspired that love to others. Janet was a water color artist winning many ribbons with the women’s club here in Estes Park with her art and photography.
Janet is preceded in death by her mother, Eunice Smith, her father, Myron L. Smith, and her husband Marion F. West III. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Pete Lyle of Wyoming, her daughter and son-in-law Franci and Dan Boscia of Pennsylvania, her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Ira Redner of Breckenridge, and daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Jim Bangs of Estes Park. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Darren Boyle, Jessica Lyle, Toby Larson, Benny Redner, Aaron Redner, David Bangs, Kyle Bangs, Matthew Bangs, and Evelyn Bangs of Estes Park. She is survived by five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Community Church of the Rockies October 21, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. The interment was at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver.
