Historian Laureate Jim Pickering To Speak On May 18th At 23rd Parade Of Years

Dr. James H. Pickering, Estes Park’s most prominent historian and author will speak on the topic of Automobile Tourism in early Estes Park at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, May 18th, at the Estes Park Senior Center as part of the exhibit of antique and vintage cars which will be on display for the 23rd Annual Parade of the Years. Early visitors to Estes Park arrived by Mountain Wagons from the trains in Loveland and each spring for the last twenty two years this tradition has been reenacted by members of the Estes Park Car Club and other area car enthusiasts. Chuck Bonza and Reid Jacobs of the Estes Park Car Club are the Event Coordinators.

The weekend events are sponsored by Engaging Loveland, Inc. and by the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc.

On May 17th over 40 antique and vintage autos will gather in downtown Loveland, Colorado, near the old depot, to show off their cars to Loveland history buffs. Breakfast is provided to tour participants on Saturday at the Loveland Museum, 501 N. Lincoln, by the City of Loveland and Engaging Loveland, Inc. The cars will travel to the Budweiser Brewery for a brief tour and then take Highway 34 to Estes Park. On Saturday evening Dr. Jim Durward will speak at the Parade of the Years dinner. Durward will talk on the history of the White automobiles and his own White Mountain Wagon. Dinner reservations are $22 for non-participants.

Sunday’s vintage auto participants will be treated to breakfast by the Town of Estes Park. Owners will exhibit their cars at the Senior Center, 220 4th St. beginning at 8:30 a.m. Estes Park residents are invited to enjoy the auto show and the Pickering lecture, and to see the Stanley Steam Team from the Stanley Museum who will make an appearance with their authentic Stanley Steam Car.

The Estes Park Museum will open at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and the Stanley Museum will open at 11:00 a.m. for visitors. For automobile registration or information on events open to the public please call the Estes Museum at 586-6256 or check the Museum website for complete schedule of events.
