Hermit Park Set To Open To The Public

-Estes Park News; Estes Park, Colorado-

On Friday, May 23, 2008, Larimer County’s newest open space, Hermit Park Open Space, will be available for public access! Online and phone-in campground reservations opened on Saturday, May 10, 2008, for 13 camper cabins and 28 campsites.

Located about two miles southeast of the town of Estes Park, off of U.S. Highway 36, this 1,362 acre property was once owned by Hewlett Packard and operated for the exclusive use and benefit of its employees. Over the years, company picnics were held at the Hermit Park group use pavilion, and families and friends of HP/Agilent employees spent time at the camper cabins and campsites. In February of 2007, through the extraordinary efforts of numerous partners, the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources acquired this spectacular property.

On May 23, 2008, the Department of Natural Resources opens the gates to the general public to enjoy Hermit Park Open Space for the first time! The opening will be celebrated in two phases. This first phase will allow access to one of the campgrounds, 13 of 15 camper cabins, and the group use pavilion. The two remaining campgrounds and cabins, as well as the trails located on the property, will open when construction is completed later this summer. Reservations for the campgrounds and cabins will be available starting 8:00 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2008, at or 1-800-397-7795.

The motto for Hermit Park Open Space is “A front country location with a back country feel.” Campsites are nicely spaced out and many offer spectacular views of Longs Peak and the Twin Sisters, gorgeous rock outcroppings and scenic mountain meadows. The rustic camper cabins offer bunk beds for 8, propane lights and heat, picnic tables and fire grates. Pricing for campsites is $20 per night: camper cabins are $80 per night. Campsites and cabins can accommodate up to eight people.

Hermit Park Open Space also offers an amazing location for your family reunion, wedding day, or company picnic. The covered pavilion, which can accommodate up to 300 people, has stunning views, picnic tables, grills, and a volleyball court. Pricing is done on a per-event basis. Requests for a special event application can be made by calling (970) 679-4570.

Larimer County entrance permits are required. Daily entrance permits are $6 and can be purchased at the gate. Annual permits are available at the entrance gatehouse, online (, at The Bison Visitor Center north of Carter Lake, at the Citizen Information Center at the Courthouse Offices Building in Fort Collins, and at local businesses in Fort Collins and Loveland.
