Helen Burgener of Estes Park, CO died at Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park Tuesday morning September 25, 2012. She was 95 years old. Helen Marie Goodall was born November 16, 1916 in Allerton, IL. Her parents were William and Hattie (Black) Goodall. Helen received her Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University in Illinois and her Master’s degree from Columbia University in New York. She taught in schools at Goodfield and Niantic, IL.
On June 14, 1942 she married Carl E. Burgener at her family home in Allerton. After WWII, the couple lived in Niles, IL for 26 years. Helen resumed teaching in 1956 and then became the first librarian at the new school building, retiring in 1973. That same year, she and Carl moved to Estes Park. Helen was active at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, particularly in the Stephen Ministers program. She also was a member of PEO, the Estes Park Women’s Club and the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom.
She is survived by her husband Carl of Estes Park, son Arnold Burgener of San Francisco, CA, daughter Carolyn Lavallee of Estes Park, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. A memorial service will be held for Helen on Wednesday October 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Community Church.
