Former Mayor Of EP Encourages A Vote For The Fire District

To The Editor:

Many people may have varying views on what services local government should be providing and what government should not be funding. I think that almost everyone would agree that having a properly trained fire department is a primary and vital function of local government.

Today the Town of Estes Park has a well trained professional volunteer department. The department is led by an excellent fire chief who has the leadership skills to efficiently administer and guide the department through the transition which would be required. The department serves not only the town but the entire Estes Valley. It clearly is in the best interest of the entire Estes Valley to insure that the fire department remains as good as it is today in years to come, while continuing to serve the entire Estes Valley.

The proposed fire district plan that you will be voting on this fall is a plan that is beneficial for both in town and out of town residents, businesses and tourists alike. It will allow participation by all of Estes Valley and will be governed by an elected board of Estes Valley citizens. Any tax increase will require a vote of the people of the district.

The status quo of the fire department’s funding must change even if the fire district is not approved. The funding methods of last hundred years for the fire department are not working well in the 21st century. The fire department is different from other town departments and should not have to compete with other town departments for funding every year. The department should not be dependent upon subscription fees and “bake sales” for funding.

This fire district, as proposed, will insure that the entire Estes valley will have the fire protection that we need in the future with the proper and necessary funding. I urge you to vote in favor on these three critical ballot issues.
