Emma Carlson of Lakewood, CO, formerly of Estes Park died Monday March 21, 2011. She was 100 years old. Emma Sophronia Wise was born November 9, 1910 in Denver, CO. Her parents were Howard and Pauline (Schwarz) Wise. She graduated from South Denver High School and Colorado A & M in 1932 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.
In 1933 she married Merlin Potts and they moved to Estes Park where Merlin was attached to the Emergency Conservation work program in Rocky Mountain National Park. He was appointed park Ranger in 1937 and in 1938 Emma moved with her husband to Mount Lassen National Park then to other Western National Parks returning in 1961 where Merlin was Chief Park Naturalist at Rocky Mountain National Park.
She was an information clerk at Rocky Mountain National Park, and a volunteer at the Elizabeth Guild and Chamber of Commerce Visitor’s Center. She was also a member of PEO Chapter GJ, Eastern Star, Kappa Delta and the Christian Science Society. Merlin died in 1966 and in 1974, Emma married Lawrence Carlson in Estes Park. She is survived by her son James Potts of Lakewood, CO and stepson Lawrence Carlson, Jr. of Steamboat Springs, CO. Other survivors include four grandchildren, one step grandchild, three great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents two husbands and one step brother. Cremation is planned and a private service will be conducted.
