Della Clements Mitchell, formerly of Estes Park, passed away on July 27, 2009 in Palmer, Alaska at the age of 95. A memorial service in her honor will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park.
Della Clements Mitchell was born July 8, 1914 to Grace Marie and Irl Roger Clements in Emporia, Kansas.
Following graduation from Emporia High School, she attended and graduated from the College of Emporia. A committed school teacher, Della taught in Dunlap, Kansas; Kirtland, New Mexico; and in the Shawnee Mission School District in suburban Kansas City.
Della married C. Freeman Mitchell on August 20, 1939 in Emporia, Kansas. Della and Freeman lived in various communities in Kansas before settling in the Kansas City area. In addition to being a teacher, Della was actively involved in her children’s schools and in the American Association of University Women.
When Freeman retired from AT&T Management in 1977, they settled in Estes Park where they lived until 1993. Della served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies and was active in the Estes Park Chapter of the Federated Women’s Club. After leaving Estes Park in 1993, she lived in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Alaska. She returned to Estes for a short time, residing at Good Samaritan Home. An accomplished seamstress and landscape painter, her clothing creations and paintings continue to adorn the closets and walls of her children.
Her husband preceded her in death in 2000. She is survived by two sons; Wayne D. Mitchell of Palmer, Alaska, and Richard F. Mitchell of Estes Park. She is also survived by two grandsons and a granddaughter; Kor Freeman Mitchell and Michael Jay Mitchell, both of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Kristina Kay Mitchell of London, England.
