Charles John “Charlie” Dobos
Charles John “Charlie” Dobos, devoted husband, father, friend, and entrepreneur died suddenly May 10, 2014 while preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day with his wife Karen and college-aged children, Nicholas and Cassandra.
While growing up in Tonawanda, NY, Charlie was a great student, developed a love for music and became an outstanding tennis player. His hard work and application of his knowledge at Cardinal O’Hara HS gained him acceptance into the engineering school that he had set his sights on when still in eighth grade. He earned a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1977 at Kettering University in Michigan (formerly called General Motors Institute) where he joined the brotherhood of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He and a good friend took hot air balloon piloting lessons, bought their own balloon and took to the skies for many adventurous journeys. He used his engineering skills at the Harrison Radiator facility in Lockport, NY. It was there that he met his beautiful wife Karen and married her at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Church in Dunkirk, NY in 1979.
After a few years, Charlie & Karen moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he worked at Gas Research Institute. A short time later they relocated to Littleton, Colorado where he worked in the Coors Ceramic Division. After a few years their entrepreneurial spirit led them to begin a successful business, building vacation homes in the Breckenridge ski area. They set aside this business when the tragic loss of their first child, Michael, made it impossible to continue. After Nicholas and Cassandra were born Charlie worked in a few small businesses from the early 1990s, including helping at Karen’s Antique Shop for a time, until 2009 when he began working for the Department of Energy in Denver. During that time they were both very busy nurturing and forming Nicholas and Cassandra into the responsible hard-working young adults they have become.
Charlie and Karen cordially welcomed family, friends and fraternity brothers to drop in for a ski vacation or summer visit to the mountains. They have enjoyed gathering with friends for over 28 years in their monthly dinner club. His “from the heart” encouragement, hardy laugh and love for a good joke or story made it impossible for people to be in a bad mood when he was nearby.
Charlie is survived by Karen, his beloved wife of 34 years, his children Nicholas and Cassandra, sister, Marilyn Dobos of Williamsville, NY, mother-in-law Loretta Sage of Dunkirk, NY, brothers-in-law Donald Sage (Debbie) of Michigan, Kenneth Sage (Nancy) of Virginia, Richard Sage (Ola) of Maryland, Alan Sage (Cathy) of Maryland, and sister-in-law Kathryn Civilette (David) of Fredonia, NY. He is also survived by several cousins and nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held for Charlie on Friday, May 16th at 1:00 p.m. at 1338 S. Jason St, Denver, CO 80223. The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made at any US Bank to the Dobos Family Memorial Fund in honor of Charlie Dobos.
