Businesses Help ‘Bears Are Us’ Group Keep Residents And Guests Bear Aware

Estes Park Mountain Shop is donating a bear canister to Bears Are Us for their bear education talks. BAU is urging all campers to place food and toiletries in a bear canister to prevent attracting bears and these containers are being required at more and more campgrounds as we continue to try to coexist with bears peacefully. We live in bear country and must learn to live together cohesively and these containers are just one more way we can do that, without endangering the bear’s lives. These canisters can be rented or purchased from the Mountain Shop, cost to rent is just $3.00 per night or to purchase a unit, they are $65-$75. They are made from super rugged transparent polycarbonate which resists impacts without shattering. Hanging bear attractants in a sack from a tree can be effective, but bear canisters are more effective and easier to use.

Please remember “a fed bear is a dead bear.” If a bear becomes used to people because of improperly stored trash, food or birdseed and breaks into a home or lodge, the bear will most likely be killed. Bears, in most cases, can not be relocated effectively.
