Berdine Wehrwein died at TRU Community Care Center in Louisville, CO, on June 15, 2013. She was 90 years old. Gladys Berdine Ellis was born November 15, 1922, in Allen, NE, daughter of John and Grace (Lamm) Ellis. She grew up in Allen, attended the University of Nebraska, and then transferred to the College of Idaho in Caldwell, ID, where she met her future husband, Arthur Wehrwein and graduated in1944. Meanwhile, Art was stationed in the Pacific theater from 1942-46.
When Art was scheduled for discharge from the Army Air Corps on March 1, 1946, she met him in San Diego, CA, and they were married the next day. The couple moved back to Chicago and made their home with his parents; Berdine continued her teaching career. She later received her master’s degree in reading education from the University of Chicago. Berdine continued teaching English and reading for more than 25 years.
On retiring in 1977, Art and Berdine moved to Phoenix, AZ. Sadly, Art died July 20, 1979. Berdine eventually went back to work at Arizona State University until her final retirement. Berdine was an avid bridge player and enjoyed watching sports, especially Nebraska’s Big Red. In 2006, she moved to Colorado, ultimately residing in Boulder.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Fleming, and her husband, Grant, of Estes Park and a son, Doug Wehrwein, and his wife, Cathy, of Elburn, IL; grandsons Nic Wehrwein of Chicago, IL, and Matt and Danny Fleming of Estes Park. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister Bernita Barney and brother Bill Ellis A celebration of Berdine’s life will take place later this summer at Regis University.
