Glenn H. Mapes, Jr.
Glenn H. Mapes, Jr. was born September 16, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Margaret Rodgers Mapes and Glenn H. Mapes. He grew up and attended schools in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Glenn volunteered for and entered the U.S. Navy in World War II and spent two years in the South Pacific and as part of the army of occupation of Japan. He received medals for service in the Pacific theater, and Victory in WWII. After such service he attended and graduated from Case Western Reserve University and Northwestern University Law School, where he received a Juris Doctorate degree. In college he was chapter president of the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta and captain of the university wrestling team.
Glenn started his work career in 1952 with Carter Oil Company, a subsidiary of Standard Oil of New Jersey – now Exxon Corporation. He rose to the position of Division Attorney for Exxon’s South Texas Division. This included the south one half of the State of Texas. He took early retirement in 1986 and moved with his wife Betty to Tahosa Ranch in Allenspark, Colorado.
Since retirement he has practiced law in Colorado and Texas but mostly he has been involved in charitable work. Glenn’s charitable work included the Estes Park Medical Center Foundation, past president; the Estes Park Library Foundation; the Estes Park Art Center, past president; the Tahosa Valley Landowner’s Association, past president; the Estes Park Rotary; the Association for Responsible Development, past president; the North St. Vrain Creek Landowner’s Association, past president; and the Allen’s Park Area Club.
Glenn has also been a member of Medex, a marathon runner and a wilderness backpacker and camper. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Betty; daughters Bonnie, Barbara and Peg; sons Tim and Jonathan; and step children David, Patty, Jack and Jacque.
A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family.
