Kay Chalender of Estes Park, CO, formerly of Overland Park, KS died at Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park on May 29th. Katherine (Kay) Lucille Wingert was born July 26, 1929 in Wellsville, KS. Her parents were Harold and Lois (George) Wingert. Kay grew up and graduated from high school in Wellsville and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Kansas State University in Manhattan. She completed her education with a dietetics internship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. On June 12, 1953 she married Ralph Evan “Jack” Chalender at the Wellsville Methodist Church.
Kay was a registered dietician and a member of the American Dietetic Association. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital and Research Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was a member of Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS where she served as both an Elder and Deacon. She and Jack spent many summers at their mountain cabin in Riverside and were summer members of the Allenspark Community Church. She was a member of PEO Chapter FN in Mission, KS; AAUW; and the Hilltop Guild. Kay will be remembered for her thoughtfulness; rarely forgetting a birthday or anniversary, kindness to others, and hospitality. She was an incredible cook and delighted in preparing meals for others. Her tomato pudding, macaroni and cheese and coconut pies were always requested at family gatherings.
Kay is survived by her husband Jack of Estes Park; daughter Betsy Thamert, her husband Andy and grandchildren Ryan and Grace of Estes Park; brothers George Wingert and his wife Jane of Ottawa, KS; Dwight Wingert and his wife Kathy of Wichita; KS and Eugene Wingert and his wife Kay of Lenexa, KS. She is also survived by a sister in law Christine Chalender of Manhattan and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother in-law Bob Chalender, and granddaughter Sara Katherine Thamert.
A memorial service will celebrate Kay’s life on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11:00 at the Allenspark Community Church.
