Representatives from 69 charities and organizations that benefit residents of the Estes Valley will gather in the Hondius Room of the Estes Park Library at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24th to pick up their packet of duck adoption forms for the May 7th Estes Park Duck Race.
“The next step is to start selling,” said Scott “Big Duck” Thompson, chairman of the Duck Race Committee. “Distribution night kicks off the sale of Duck Race tickets by the 69 organizations who will share in the proceeds of the Race.”
Each year more than 5,000 little yellow rubber ducks are dropped into Fall River and float from Nicky’s Resort and Restaurant to the Wheel Bar in Riverside Plaza in downtown Estes Park. Those who have purchased a duck for $20 have a good chance of winning a prize donated by local merchants.
“The success of the Duck Race each year depends on how good a job these organizations do in selling adoption forms,” said Thompson. “For every duck that’s adopted for $20, the organization gets back $19. That’s a great return on their investment of time and energy in selling duck adoptions.”
Last year’s Duck Race raised more than $105,000 for 67 organizations. On distribution night, Thompson said the organizations will also get a briefing of a new wrinkle that’s been added to this year’s Race – the Estes Park Duck Race is going cyber!
Anyone who wants to adopt a duck can now do it online at www.EPduckRace.org. All major credit and debit cards can be used for payment online.
“It’s fast, efficient, and you can do it from anywhere in the world 24/7,” explained Thompson. “This is something new we’re trying for the first time this year. We’ll be encouraging our participating organizations on the 24th to stress the online purchase possibility in their own newsletters and at their meetings. We think online, credit card duck adoptions will bring in extra money they wouldn’t ordinarily collect. Think of it as extra icing on a big yellow duck cake.
