Roosevelt National Forest Slash Burning
Firefighters from the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest plan to burn slash piles February 9th and could continue through the week as conditions allow in a number of locations. Burning is planned for Pinewood, located near the Pinewood Springs subdivision; Thompson River, located west of the Pinewood Reservoir; and Cache la Poudre Piles, located near the intersection of Highway 14 and Pingree Park Road. If snow conditions do not allow for burning in these locations, then burning could take place at Pingree Hill , located 1.5 miles north-northeast of Rustic, and Fish Creek, located south of Estes Park near the Little Valley subdivision.
To date, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District has burned more than 11,800 piles this winter.
Each day conditions are evaluated to determine if ignition will take place. Wind, fuel moisture, staffing, and snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs.
