Richard S. Casebeer (Casey)
Richard S. Casebeer (Casey) passed away peacefully in his mountain cabin in Glen Haven, Colorado on Sunday, May 23, 2010. He died of congestive heart failure and complications of diabetes.
He was born in Los Angeles, California on June 19, 1929 to Mary Louise (Moon) Casebeer and Chauncey Roy Casebeer. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and obtained B.A. and M.S. in Zoology and a PhD in Biology all from the University of Southern California. While working on his PhD, he resided with his family in Costa Rica for several years. Upon receipt of his doctorate degree, he went to work for the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) in Boulder, Colorado under the auspices of The National Science Foundation (NSF). Which again returned him to Costa Rica where he worked with the Biology Departments of the National Universities of Central America.
Upon completion of this governmental contract work, he returned to the states and accepted a position as Chairman of the Education Department of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. After two years of commuting in the traffic of New York, he returned to his beloved Colorado to work as the Environmental Education Coordinator for the Northern Colorado Educational Board of Cooperative Services (a consortium of six public school districts in Northern Colorado).
After retirement, he moved to his dear cabin in Glen Haven, where he worked in his woodworking shop and fished a lot. At the age of 80, he still subscribed to “Playboy” magazine because he said, he liked to do the crossword puzzles. Dr. Casebeer, donated his body to science.
He is survived by his loved one, Linda Medley of Estes Park, Colorado and his three daughters: Laura Louise Diede of Broomfield, Colorado, Lynn Jeanine Knerr of Del Mar, California, Carol Elana Casebeer of Loveland, Colorado and his four grandchildren, William J. Goodrich, Jr., Lynn Stratton Goodrich, Jamie Goodrich, Katie Knerr, and his great grandchild, Charlotte Knerr.
