R.D. Nolan, 83, passed away at Texoma Healthcare Center in Sherman, TX on March 4, 2010.
R.D. was born on May 12, 1926 in Texarkana, TX, the son of Marcus Lloyd and Claudia Pearl Parker Nolen. He graduated from Denton High School in 1944 and then attended North Texas State University.
IN 1994, R.D. joined the U.S. Merchant Marines. A civilian fleet responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peacetime. R.D. served as deckhand and traveled all around the world.
After he left the U.S. Merchant Marines, he went back to Texas to help his brother Lloyd run an aerial agricultural application business in the Rio Grande Valley. R.D. learned how to fly by watching his brother and other pilots and feeling the controls.
He married Joyce Elaine Green in 1951 and she preceded him in death on November 13,1981. He was an artistic craftsman and master knifemaker as well as an avid reader of Louis L’Amour. He was a worldwide hunter and fisherman, traveling to many exotic places. He was a member of the Knifemakers’ Guild and owned Nolen Knives in Estes Park, CO where he custom-made beautiful knives in the 90s.
Survivors include his sons Roger Nolen and his wife, Zeferina of Pottsboro, TX and Steve Nolen and his wife Shelley of Longmont, CO, brother George Nolen of Pottsboro, TX, sister Mary Ann Bernardin and her husband, David of Pottsboro, TX and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his partents, his wife and two brothers.
Memorial services were held on March 13, 2010 at the Johnson-Moore Pottsboro Chapel in Texas.
