Knox Box Resolution Adopted By Estes Valley Fire Protection District
On March 10, 2010, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District Board passed a resolution requiring certain businesses and residential properties to install a Knox Box on their property by March 10, 2011. Properties affected are all commercial and industrial properties that have an automatic fire suppression or alarm system, and multi-family residential structures that have restricted access through locked doors and have a common corridor for access to the living units.
A Knox Box is part of the Knox-Box® Rapid Entry System and was specifically developed for fire departments in order to gain access to a property in an emergency. With a master key the fire department is able to gain access to certain commercial, industrial, and residential properties. More than 10,000 fire departments nation-wide currently use the Knox-Box®
Knox Boxes are special vault-like lock boxes that are purchased and installed near the entrance of a building by the property owner. Each Knox Box purchased by the property owner is keyed to a master key, controlled by the local fire department. With the Knox Box system there is no waiting for a property owner to unlock the door in the middle of the night, and no forcing, and damaging, the door to gain entry. The Knox-Box Rapid Entry System reduces response time, property damage, and the liability for lost keys.
The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department has also installed in its apparatus pin coded secured access to the master key. This allows secure, immediate access to the key when on scene. This pin-code Key-Secure Box® also allows the fire department to track when the master key was used and by whom, giving greater security to the resident, property, or business owner.
They only Estes Valley Fire Protection District approved lock box at this time in the Knox® lock box. A Knox Box can be ordered online at www.knoxbox.com.
