Mary Elaine Atwood Calhoun, 89, of Estes Park, died Saturday, December 12, 2009. Mary was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, October 22, 1920. She graduated from Milwaukee Downer College and served in the Women’s Air Corp program during World War II. In college she studied Home Economics-Costume Design. It was in college that her love of painting took flight and she became an accomplished portrait artist. Mary married William Calhoun in 1943 in Milwaukee.
During their 57 years of marriage, they resided in Texas, Georgia and Michigan, before they retired to the Estes Park/Allenspark area in 1977 where they were active in the community for many years. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 2000, her brother John Atwood, her sisters, Jane Borchert and Carol Wentworth, and her granddaughter, Gwen Calhoun. She is survived by her children, Barbara Calhoun Watson of Denver, Bob (Sandy) Calhoun of Fort Collins and Bill (Jo) Calhoun of Denver, seven grandchildren: Jessica Watson, Clay Watson, Mary Elizabeth Luzar, Mark Calhoun, Molly Calhoun, Grant Calhoun and Claire Calhoun, and by her many friends.
