Nature’s Tranquility, featuring the beautiful photography of Mel Wilson opens this Friday, November 21 and runs through December 31, 2008 at the Art Center of Estes Park.
Mel is a gifted photographer who started out taking photos of people, as a wedding photographer and other ‘people-related; photos. He also did some landscape and scenery photography back when he lived in Medina, Ohio and that experience allowed Mel to gain the knowledge he needed about the operation of his camera, characteristics of film as well as his camera equipment. He also learned valuable lessons about the importance of light, exposure and composition.
After he retired in 1983 Mel and his wife moved to Estes Park. It was here that he became aware of the many wonderous scenes in the western states. Mel strived to produce beautiful, artistic photographs and to capture the beauty of God’s creations.
Mel works with 35 millimeter and a 4 X 5 field view cameras. He favors using a slow speed, color film for better color saturation and control. He has the keen ability to recognize a scene and seek the most pleasurable and presentable composition. He feels that the element that makes a scene or landscape artistic is the emotions inside the photographer. There must be a connection between the photographer and the scene, or the photo just won’t have the impact.
Mel has obviously been given a special talent and he believes that talent should be used to make a photo a work of art, not just a snapshot.
Come see Mel’s outstanding photographs and meet him at the reception which will be held this Friday, November 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the Art Center. The event is sponsored by Mayor Bill and Sue Pinkham. The Art Center is located at 517 Big Thompson Ave., just above the Subway Shop in Stanley Village.
