EP Western Heritage Presents “Beat The Heat” Barrel Racing Series
Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc. is pleased to present “Beat the Heat” Barrel Racing Series and Gymkhana this weekend, June 1-2 and again on Sept 14 -15. Come enjoy the excitement of barrel racing in the rodeo arena at the Fairgrounds at Estes Park. The fun begins with practice runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the barrel racing starts at noon.
Barrel racing began in Texas as a fun activity for women who came along to roping competitions with their husbands. After the husband roped, the wife or daughter would get on the horse and ride them around the barrel pattern. There was no special training, so the horse who was the fastest usually won. In the 1950s, people started taking barrel racing more seriously and special clinics were held. Specialized training equipment like barrel racing saddles were also made for the first time. Now, older methods of training have been replaced by educated riders and good horsemanship and more specialized riding and training equipment is being used in competitions today. The amount of prize money is now equal to that in the other rodeo events. Barrel racing has gotten very competitive and riders at this Estes Park event are actually riding for times/scores that will put them in ranking for the National Finals in Oklahoma City later this summer.
This Open 4-D Jackpot Barrel Race & Gymkhana will benefit the Youth Scholarship Fund – supported by the Rooftop Rodeo Royalty Program of Estes Park.
