Estes Park’s Historic Lodges In Library Display

The historic lodges of Estes Park, past and present, are being celebrated this month in a special display in the lobby case at the Estes Valley Library. The exhibit was assembled from the personal collection of Suzanne Silverthorn, author of “Rocky Mountain Tour”.

For more than one hundred years, Estes Park’s hoteliers have formed long-lasting friendships with their guests. Today, many of the children and grandchildren of those earlier visitors make the pilgrimage to experience that same friendly hospitality and scenic beauty, as well as to reflect upon their fond memories of the lodges. Make plans to visit the Library’s lobby case to see a collection of photographs, menus, dinnerware, and other memorabilia from Longs Peak Inn, the Stanley Hotel, the Elkhorn Lodge, the Baldpate Inn, and the Bear Lake Lodge, among others. Artifacts from the lodges have been paired with books that detail the history of the properties and their contributions in the development of modern-day tourism in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.
This exhibit will be on display only through Saturday, August 28, so residents, visitors and history buffs are encouraged to make a stop at the Library this week to see this special collection.

Tales From The Titanic

The Estes Park Public Library will present “Uncle Olaus Survives the Titanic” for students in fourth grade and up. Adults are also welcome to attend the program on Saturday, February 21st at 2:00 in the Hondius Room of the public library.

Storyteller Pam Faro will recount the tale of her Great Uncle Olaus, who was a survivor of the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic. Left to die in the frigid Atlantic, Olaus was pulled from the water by the passengers of the only lifeboat to return to the scene.

At the conclusion of Pam’s story, she will share photos of her great uncle taken just after he landed in New York following his rescue and others taken later when Pam knew him as an old man.

Since 1988, Pam Faro has earned her living by offering top-quality storytelling performances and workshops. She’s performed on the symphonic stage of the Colorado Music Festival, for city-wide literacy programs in Phoenix, on canoe trips down Colorado’s rivers, and at art festivals with audiences numbering many hundreds. Colorado storyteller Pam Faro has performed and taught in schools, libraries, churches and theaters across the United States.

“Uncle Olaus Survives the Titanic” is a multigenerational program made possible from a grant the library received from the Colorado State Library with monies from the Library and Technology Services Act.

Space is limited for this program. Sign up by calling the public library at 586-8116.

Library To Close For Late December Remodeling

The Youth Room of the Estes Park Public Library will be undergoing a major remodeling project in late December. The popular children’s area will be improved with a new design and new carpeting along with comfortable furnishings and attractive features. Other improvements will include repainting the lobby, new overhead lighting in the atrium, fixture upgrades in the restrooms, and new stairwell treads.

Because the construction work will impact access and safety in the library, the building will be closed to the public beginning on Monday, December 15. The building will re-open on Monday, December 29.
Library staff will be working during the construction time to assist with moving materials and related projects.

Staff and volunteers will answer phones and offer limited service during designated daytime hours. Details will be announced in the weeks ahead about hours of limited access and what services patrons may access during construction time. Plans include an off-site storytime event and community access to free paperback shelves around town. Library visitors are encouraged to “stock up” on reading and other materials to take home before December 15. For any questions, please contact library staff at 586-8116.
