WANTED- adult men and women who want to help create positive experiences for boys and girls in the Estes Valley. Your challenge, if you accept it, will be to spend about one hour a month as a member of the Partners Mentoring Youth Advisory Council. January is National Mentoring Month, a great time to reflect on who mentored you and who you have mentored.

Partners Mentoring Youth’s mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships between positive adult role models and youth in the Estes Park area that are facing challenges in their personal, social, and academic lives. Your role as a member of the Partners Advisory Council is to work with Partners Program Coordinator, Diana Laughlin, not as a mentor but to help provide expertise and guidance to the organization.

Eight years ago my wife and I both retired from teaching. We had built our retirement home in Estes Park. Now that we had more time to devote to other activities, we began looking for opportunities to get involved in helpful, positive ways in the Estes Park area. I knew the schools up here were always needing substitute teachers, so I got involved doing that. While substituting for Terry Leija in 3rd grade, he invited me to join the Advisory Council for Partners Mentoring Youth. My whole adult life had been built around teaching, coaching, and doing as much as possible to help young people. He said this would be a way for me to continue helping youth in the Estes Park area.

At my first Advisory Council Meeting I was very pleased to find council members that held many positions in our community. They included bankers, educators, a nail stylist, a nurse, and other retirees. The one thing they had in common was a desire to help young people in Estes. I felt the good I was able to do by participating on the council was an easy trade off for the few hours a year I put in on council activities that helped many young people in Estes.

So please join us if you want to try to make a difference in the life of our Estes Valley youth. Call Diana Laughlin at 970-577-9348 and ask how you can be involved with Partners as an Advisory Council member or a mentor to a boy or girl needing help.
